Juz 1: Surah Baqarah Verse 132

Full Submission

Ayan Sayyed

This was the advice of Abraham- as well as Jacob-to his children, [saying], "Indeed, Allah has chosen for you this faith; so do not die except in [a state of full] submission."

If there was one verse in the Qur’an that establishes the meaning of the spec RUSubmissions, it would be this one:

“Indeed, Allah has chosen for you this faith; so do not die except in a state of full submission”.

--

As the children of Ibrahim AS, we have been chosen by Allah SWT to represent Islam.

We must be unapologetically Muslim to represent our faith wherever we are.

That could be praying in public in the library using your jacket as a prayer rug.

Or that could be informing your professor about excusing you from class for sometime so you can break your fast and pray Maghrib.

If Allah has chosen us for this faith, what greater honor is there than this?

Allah could have chosen anyone.

There are over 7.888 billion people in the world.

We have been chosen.

Alhamdulillah, we are blessed with Islam: the greatest gift we could ever ask for in this dunya.

--

As this has been the goal of RUSubmissions to express our Islamic faith proudly in different forms of art

whether that be calligraphy, cooking, filmmaking, pottery, and many more styles.

Art has no bounds- there is no right way to define what constitutes art and what does not.

The common factor between this form of art is they all serve as a reminder to turn back to our Lord.

--

The root meaning of Submissions lies within the fact that we submit to our Lord.

It’s the true meaning of Islam.

We were created to submit.

I pray we do not die except in a state of full submission.

Ameen.

In order for us to reach towards ihsan, we must be in full submission.

In this blessed month of Ramadan, let us strive towards Allah SWT.

As Allah SWT says in a hadith qudsi, “Whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running.

Whoever meets Me with enough sins to fill the earth, not associating any partners with Me, I will meet him with as much forgiveness”

(Sahih Muslim 2687).

Reflection

Nabeel Akbar

Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed. Our Lord, so forgive us our sins and remove from us our misdeeds and cause us to die among the righteous.

The verse I have here is from Surah Al-Imran ayat 193. The verse talks about Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and kind of reiterating that he is the messenger of Allah. He was the one who brought the message and it is up to us to believe in it and follow the message correctly and to the best we can. Allah is the most forgiving and he loves to forgive and it is very important that we die on the righteous path of islam and make dua we die a good death since the deed we die on is the deed we will be resurrected on on the day of judgement. Ramaḍan is the month of forgiveness and repentance. The word 'Ramaḍān' is derived from ramaḍ which refers to the intense burning heat of the sun. Thus, 'Ramadan' is the month in which the sins of the believer are burned by their righteous deeds. This month can change our lives forever maybe even change our destiny. Only Allah knows if we will capatalize on it or not but this verse reminds me that we need to repent follow our beloved Prophet ﷺ  and his teachings and practices so we can leave this month better than when we started and in sha Allah our sins will be burned away.

Reflection

These verse have highlighted the Mercy and Might of Allah (SWT)

It delves into the hearts and minds of humans

Although the Surah is The Woman

Allah still talks about all of Humankind

To not be jealous of what other possesses

Women and Men alike will be rewarded for their deeds

The opposite is the same

And the believing Men and women alike

That fight in the cause of Allah

They shall be rewarded for their deeds

Allah is Al Mu’izz (The Honorer)

And to always mediate affairs justly

Allah sees everything

He is Al-Baseer (The All-Seeing)

And to always mediate affairs justly

He is Al-Hakam (The Giver of Justice)

Humans are created to interact with each other

And if that connection is harmed

The whole of mankind is harmed

So watch out for your brothers and sisters

And the most thankful and grateful of you will

Surely receive the reward from Allah

And Allah is Ar-Rahman.

Awad Shawl

Allah does not like negative thoughts to be voiced—except by those who have been wronged.1 Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Of Juz 6, Ayah 4:148 stuck out to me as Allah SWT says that he does not like it when people talk about others' mistakes when said people are not involved in the situation. Within our local community, we're quick to judge and outcast others for their mistakes, even though we're not involved in many of these situations. We should strive to focus on our deen and what we can do ourselves for the world. We should also be more forgiving of others as it is not our place to judge individuals; that is left to Allah SWT.

The Key to Jannah

Filza Alam

So Allah rewarded them for what they said with gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And the reward of doers of good.

This Ayaat discusses that those who believe are granted Jannah, also known as Paradise. Jannah

is described to be filled with eternal gardens and rivers. Jannah is the reward to those who are true

believers of Islam. Following Islam in a Western society is tough, but I think about the reward that

Allah will give us in the hereafter for following Islam. He is so merciful and forgiving that even if we do

make a mistake, Jannah is still granted as long as we have repented to him.

Adam was noble and human like you and me, his temptation came in the form of a tree

In the humiliation of sin, he sought the mercy of His lord, the respite he found set himfree

Oh fallible one, why do you drown in the sorrows of sin, when infinite mercy is Allah’sdecree?

Recite the dua of Adam sincerely, let the promise of Allah fill you with glee

The trees of Heaven are your truth, you will eat from its fruit merrily

Do you deserve it?

Ameena Brown

But when good came to them, they said, "This is ours [by right]." And if a bad [condition] struck them, they saw an evil omen in Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their fortune is with Allah, but most of them do not know.

Often when I read Ayaat about past nations I can make the mistake of only thinking about how misguided they were. But that is not the only reason they are in the Quran. How many times because we worked hard for something have we felt that we deserved it, or even if we didn’t work hard for it felt it was our right. This thinking is the exact attitude of firaun and his people of thinking that everything they have was because they earned it. We should always remember that thinking you earned something or deserve better is a quality of shaitaan. We should strive to remind ourselves that everything is by the will of Allah and if he gives us something it is out of his mercy and if he takes something it is out of his wisdom. And Allah knows best

We should strive to remind ourselves that everything is by the will of Allah and if he gives us something it is out of his mercy and if he takes something it is out of his wisdom. And Allah knows best

Juz 9: Surah Al-Araf Verse 131

O Prophet! Tell the captives in your custody, “If Allah finds goodness in your hearts, He will give you better than what has been taken from you, and forgive you. For Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.”

Alhamdulillah, we’re a third of the way through Ramadan and we have so much to reflect on from the first ‘ashra and the first ten juz of the Qur’an.

The tenth juz focuses on the themes of war and conflict with parts of Surah al-Anfal (the Battle Gains) and Surah al-Tawbah (the Repentance). These surahs are known for being chapters about warfare and are often misinterpreted by people who want to depict Islam in a negative light, however we can learn many beautiful lessons from them.

The prisoners who were taken in the Battle of Badr were released against ransom. These prisoners were extreme enemies of Islam who took any slight opportunity to harass, torture, beat, and kill the Muslims. Despite being in a position of power and enduring so much pain and discomfort, the Muslims chose to spare the prisoners’ lives and did not ask for as much ransom as they could have.

Most commentators believe this verse was revealed about Sayyidina al-‘Abbas, the uncle of the Prophet ﷺ who was a disbeliever and prisoner of Badr that had to give ransom. He was captured early, which Allah (swt) wanted as it was painful and difficult for the Prophet ﷺ and Sahabah to see their loved ones held captive. The Prophet ﷺ asked his uncle to ransom himself, however al-‘Abbas said he did not have any money.

The Prophet ﷺ told al-‘Abbas about money that only he and his wife were aware of, which he asked the Prophet about as he entrusted his wife with that money secretly. The Prophet ﷺ then informed him that Allah told him about it, which confirmed al-‘Abbas’ realization that he ﷺ was a true prophet. Allah removed his doubts and he accepted Islam at that moment. This verse promised al-‘Abbas that the money he would spend in ransom would be returned by Allah (swt) in much better ways if he embraced Islam. Al-‘Abbas did not immediately announce his conversion as the money he loaned out to the Quraysh would have gone to waste. After al-‘Abbas paid the ransom and his conversion went public, he became much wealthier and was blessed with the ability to serve Hujjaj (the visiting pilgrims) with Zamzam water, SubhanAllah!

This ayah addresses the prisoners, providing them with hope and a much better life than the one they used to live. If they followed the straight path and opened their hearts to Islam, they were promised a beautiful life with forgiveness, mercy, and blessings. Indeed, if Allah finds goodness in your hearts, He will grant you much better than was taken from you and will forgive you as well. The pleasures of this dunya distract us from our real purpose, but truly submitting to Allah (swt) and giving things up for His sake brings amazing blessings and rewards. Everything we have in this world was given by Allah, and our main purpose is to submit to Him. If we have goodness in our hearts, Allah (swt) will grant us much better than what was taken from us and forgive us as well, as He is Al-Ghafur (Forgiving) and Al-Raheem (Merciful)!

Sufficient for me is Allah - a statement if we believe with certainty will bring contentment in our lives, relying on no one but the All Powerful, The Creator, The Provider of Sustenance

There is no God but Him - our purpose of life, the foundation of faith and something we live by, the reason why we were created - to worship none but Allah and to seek help from Him alone

In Him have I put my trust - a building block of iman is having tawakkal and the key to peace in our hearts, rest assured your future is in the hands of the Best of Planners, we believe in Allah and hoping a reward from Him, He who never disappoints and never breaks His promise

He is the Lord of the mighty Throne - Allah’s station is the Highest of the High above the seven heavens, He is the Most High and far beyond anyone’s comprehension or imagination

No amount of words can describe the depth and beauty of this ayah. To truly grasp the beauty of the verse, a recommendation would be to listen to the tafsir. Remembering this ayah in the morning and evening is a good habit to implement this Ramadan.

This Ayaat discusses that those who believe are granted Jannah, also known as Paradise. Jannah is described to be filled with eternal gardens and rivers. Jannah is the reward to those who are true believers of Islam. Following Islam in a Western society is tough, but I think about the reward that Allah will give us in the hereafter for following Islam. He is so merciful and forgiving that even if we do

make a mistake, Jannah is still granted as long as we have repented to him.

Had your Lord so willed, He would have certainly made humanity one single community ˹of believers˺, but they will always ˹choose to˺ differ.

Had your Lord so willed, He would have certainly made humanity one single community ˹of believers˺, but they will always ˹choose to˺ differ.

I remember sitting at a lunch table as a middle schooler maybe 10 or 11. There was laughter everywhere but my table. My food smelled funky apparently. I was told I should’ve had pizza. When I first saw someone else bring food like mine, I didn't go sit with them. I ridiculed them in my head. They should have brought something less “cultural.” “They wouldn’t be alone if they didn’t bring THAT.”

I remember being told that the clothes I was wearing didn't compliment my skin. I was too dark for the baby pink and pastel purples I was obsessed with. I was told I should’ve been born lighter or stick to the darker colors. When a girl my age rocked the pastel colors I was always afraid of wearing; when a girl with a skin tone darker than mine rocked the clothes I always dreamt of having the confidence to wear, I didn't think oh wait a second I could do it too. I was jealous and I was angry.

Maybe I'm over heightening the issues and making them extensive when essentially it's just childhood jealousy but reality is before judging others we forget how it feels to be judged ourselves. Allah (swt) could've made us all the same. All of us could've looked the same, wore the same clothes, ate the same things and behaved the same way, but what’s the beauty in that?  We love to see differences in nature. We admire the beauty of variation. Why is it that when it comes to differences amongst ourselves, we begin to hate? From when did my lunch make me any worse than anyone else? From when did the colors decide what I can or cannot wear? And, who was I to get angry when people broke conventional norms and still had support?

Point being, as long as it's halal wear the dress you want to wear; eat the things you want to eat and dress the way you want to dress. Your life is a garden, decorate it as you wish. Allah (swt) has adorned us with a diverse array of flowers, each with its own unique beauty. Let's refrain from squandering our energy on futile disputes or judging one another's preferences. Stop nitpicking every flower and look at the whole garden for a change. After all, in a world filled with endless possibilities, why limit ourselves to just one flower?

Have you ever felt a feeling of emptiness in your heart? As if there is a pit, a hole, that just gets heavier and heavier the more you try filling it? The pleasures of this world are not strong enough to lift the burden off your heart. They may be a bandage fix. But Who gave those worldly pleasures in the first place? Allah! Perhaps we have been depending too long on the creation rather than the Creator. Perhaps we have been submitting to societal trends rather than the beautiful trends set by Allah for us! It’s time that we turn back to Allah and nourish our hearts with the peaceful home it deserves.

Our hearts are yearning for Allah. Our hearts feel homesick because they haven’t visited Allah in a long time. Our hearts want to beat with purpose.

In Allah we find purpose, and in Him, we find our hearts a home.

We bestowed (the same wisdom, judgment and knowledge) upon Ayyub. Recall, when he cried to his Lord: "Behold, disease has struck me and You are the Most Merciful of those that are merciful."

The words of Prophet Ayyub’s prayer are note-worthy as he mentions his distress to his Lord by saying: “You are the most Merciful.” This is a great proof of his fortitude, noble and contented nature. The Quran presents him as a veritable picture of patience and fortitude and an excellent model for the worshippers of Allah.

In Prophet Ayyub’s whisper to Allah SWT, he implied that the pain had only lightly touched him; it was something that did not affect him immensely. In this sense, “touched” is linked to gentleness, love, and affection. This teaches us to be mindful of our word usage in our supplications to Allah SWT.

Prophet Ayyub AS was a prophet who was praised by Allah SWT for his patience. He stood strong throughout the incredibly challenging trial that Allah SWT had put upon him. It was because of the extent of this difficulty that Prophet Ayyub was praised by Allah SWT as the model of true patience for us all.

Despite the immense hope and faith in Allah SWT that Prophet Ayyub held, he had a lot of adab with Allah SWT. This is the adab of speaking to Allah SWT. Regardless of what trials may come upon us, as believers, we trust that all trials were given to us by Allah SWT. Regardless of how difficult they may be, we know that Allah SWT has given it to us because He knows what we can bear.

Prophet Ayyub AS has taught us that a believer never gives up. A believer firmly believes that Allah SWT is the Most Merciful amongst anyone who has mercy. A believer stays firm in his belief that in spite of the pain and difficulty, Allah SWT’s Mercy and aid will always prevail for as long as they remain faithful to Him.

The Slander of Aisha (RA)

Goodness
of Hearts

Kainat Azhar

Kainat Azhar

In Surah Nur, verses 11-21, Allah talks about the incident regarding Aisha (RA), the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Aisha once accompanied the Prophet on a campaign and accidentally got separated from the caravan. Safwan bin Mu`attal, who was traveling separately, saw her stranded and helped her return home in a dignified manner. However, many suspicions and rumors flared up after this incident. People laid false accusations on Aisha (RA) and stirred doubts and anxieties in the hearts of those around her.

Allah then revealed these ten verses, in which He reprimands people for coming up with the “outrageous slander” (Qur’an 24:11) against Aisha. He then questions why they believed this false accusation, why they didn’t produce four witnesses, and why they insisted on spreading the rumor despite not knowing the truth. Allah says, “When you passed it from one tongue to the other, and said with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, taking it lightly while it is ˹extremely˺ serious in the sight of Allah” (Qur’an 24:15), reinforcing the idea that Allah did not take the slander of a chaste woman lightly. He then warns the people that if they are true believers, they’re forbidden from doing anything like this again, unless they’re willing to face a severe punishment.

I always find this story incredibly fascinating and heart-touching. At a time where almost everyone was either against Aisha or distant from her, her faith and tawakkul didn’t waver. She knew that even if the entire world was against her, Allah would have her back.

I remember crying when I heard this story for the first time. I was deeply touched by the fact that Allah so severely hated the slander of an innocent woman that He—Lord of the worlds—publicly defended her (and subsequently all falsely accused women) in the Qur’an for eternity.

It’s both upsetting and terrifying, then, that we so easily gossip and backbite about our brothers and sisters, not knowing that what may take us five seconds to say is something the Lord of the worlds does not at all take lightly.

In the remaining days of Ramadan and eventually for the rest of our lives, Insha Allah, let us make it a point to hold our tongues and refrain from gossiping or backbiting in any way, shape, or form. Let us think twice before making a seemingly casual comment or blurting something in passing, especially knowing that none of it is casual or forgettable in the eyes of Allah (SWT).

Juz 19: Surah Al-Furqan Verses 27-30

Juz 19: Surah Al-Furqan Verses 27-30

You are who your friends are

Anonymous

On the Day of Judgement, the disbelievers who used to mock the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) together will turn on one another when they realize they are destined for Hell. Turning one another, they will blame their friends – whose names they can’t even remember – for turning them away from the truth.

But it’s not only the disbelievers who will regret the choices they made in this world. In these verses, the wrongdoer does not say, “If only I believed in the Messenger,” but rather, he says, “If only I had taken the path alongside the Messenger,” denoting that the wrongdoer is also Muslim.

Full of regret, he wishes he could have taken a lifestyle consistent with the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and the Quran. And as he watches the Messenger and his followers make their way to Paradise, this person blames their friend who pulled them away from Islam in this life by involving him in haram, making him neglect his prayers and believe that Islam was unimportant.

Though he may have been exposed to goodness through different times in his life, this one bad friend was the one who truly influenced his decisions and fate in the Hereafter. And on this Day like no other, the Messenger will testify against those who had knowledge of the Quran but did not take it seriously.

Being around bad influences will cause us to commit sins; even if we think it won’t affect us, we will eventually adopt the bad habits we are surrounded by.

On the other hand, good company is the thing that will solidify and strengthen our Taqwa, God-consciousness, because it is always easier to do things when those around you influence you.

How often do we stop and take a minute to reflect on the friends we have? Are they friends who celebrate our wrong-doings, or are they people who will pull us with them towards good?

In a hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (RA), the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “On the Day of Judgment, Allah (SWT) will announce, ‘Where are those who love each other for the sake of My pleasure? This day I am going to shelter them in the shade provided by Me. Today there is no shade except My shade.’” [Sahih Muslim]

The only way we can achieve the love of Allah (SWT) is if we find people who are also in love with Allah (SWT), and we love them for His sake, and we move with them in everything that He (SWT) loves and is pleased with.

May Allah (SWT) keep us in the company of good people and make us people who take the Quran seriously. Ameen.

Have you seen ˹O Prophet˺ those who have taken their own desires as their god? ˹And so˺ Allah left them to stray knowingly, sealed their hearing and hearts, and placed a cover on their sight. Who then can guide them after Allah? Will you ˹all˺ not then be mindful?

We can only find true comfort when we worship Allah and keep him in our remembrance. Chasing our desires and living for the sake of fulfilling our materialistic goals can make us think we are gaining happiness and comfort, when in reality we are only deceiving ourselves. The “comfort” someone would find in worldy things, in reality, is cheap, and people who find comfort in Allah and are in a state of constant remembrance of him are not blind to how cold and fake chasing the dunya is. This painting is made to depict how those who worship things they fancy are only deceiving themselves, representing how the comfort someone finds in Allah can not be replicated through anything this dunya has to offer.

Companionship with Allah

Yousef Nasr

Indeed, ˹it is˺ We ˹Who˺ created humankind and ˹fully˺ know what their souls whisper to them, and We are closer to them than ˹their˺ jugular vein.

Sometimes the only thing that keeps a Muslim moving through life, let alone throughout the day, is his companionship with Allah swt. The companionship with Allah provides solace, reassuring believers of His omnipresence—not ahead, behind, or beside them, but as near as their jugular vein, which carries blood from the brain to the heart. This profound closeness marvels non-Muslims, who observe the unwavering trust (tawakkul) with which Muslims navigate life. Conversely, Muslims also marvel at how those without faith (Iman) find the courage to face daily life.

Who Guides You?

Saniya Tasnim

By the stars when they fade away!

By the stars when they fade away!

By the stars when they fade away!

“by the star when it goes down to set”

a product of the Earth’s rotation

specifically, Pleiades

an open star cluster

hundreds upon hundreds of stars

a twinkling blue phenomenon

against pitch black

a mesmerizing sight

for the naked eye

but more importantly

in the vast desert

sandy waves

a blanket of darkness, an eerie silence

a beckoning call

confusion dancing in their eyes

worry lining their features

fear gripping their heart

of the unknown, of the darkness

perhaps of both

until

necks craned upwards, eyes squinting

a finger raised towards the heavens

a sigh of relief

finally

a sense of direction

of navigation

of guidance

had they looked any further

just a little bit

still at the stars

or in the depths of the ocean

or simply

in their own hearts

they would have known

that the guidance of their Lord is far greater

for if the stars can guide them home

(a temporary residence)

then what of the Lord who created them?

would He not guide them

eternally

to Him?

for it is not what,

but who guides you

Trust in Allah is Being Mindful of Allah

Afrin Shaikh

and provide for them from sources they could never imagine. And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He ˹alone˺ is sufficient for them. Certainly Allah achieves His Will. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.
